The
City of Belleville has an exciting and colorful sporting history,
but one that, until recently, was the domain of the men and women
who had participated in sports for many years, or who had lived
a greater part of this century. The Sports Hall of Fame was created
to honour and recognize those who have done so much for sports
in the City.
With
limited resources, but with the support of the City's Recreation
Department, founder Paul Kirby and committee members James Hurst,
Drury Denyes, Denis Newman and Fred Brooks wrote the Hall of Fame's
constitution in 1986 and organized the first annual induction
ceremony in September of the folLowing year.
That
first year, in 1987, 15 members were inducted at the Sir James
Whitney School auditorium in an emotion-packed ceremony. The following
year, five memhers were selected, the maximum permitted under
the constitution.
The general gublic is invited to complete nomination forms for
any athlete, executive, or ''builder'' they feel are worthy for
induction into the hall of Fame, and the nominations are then
reviewed by a selection committee.
ALL
are welome to attend the annual general meeting and are encouraged
to
participate in The Belleville Sports Hall of Fame
